We completed an alignment check and reported on the span opening of the Spit Bridge for Downer Group.

Utilising the multi-coupling measurement mode on the ROTALIGN Touch, the Aquip team were able to connect four laser / receiver pairs to a single handset at once.

Project

Multiple Coupling Spit Bridge

Project Overview
  • Aquip were contacted by Downer Group, the leading provider of integrated services in Australia and New Zealand, to complete an alignment check and report on the span opening mechanism of the Spit Bridge.
  • The Spit Bridge is a steel and concrete girder bridge with a lift span across Middle Harbour in Sydney.
  • Utilising the multi-coupling measurement mode on the ROTALIGN Touch, the Aquip team were able to connect four laser / receiver pairs to a single handset at once.
  • A variety of different bracket styles were also employed to complete the set up on the 700mm diameter couplings.
Project Challenges
  • The alignment inspection was to be carried out on five machine trains including the main shaft that actuated the girth gear to open the span.
  • For over 60 years the bridge has carried The Spit Road and connected the suburbs of Mosman with the northern Beaches, making it a vital part of Sydney’s road infrastructure as it opens four times a day.
  • With these factors in mind, the allocated time to perform the alignment check and report on the span opening was limited and the job needed to be carried out quickly.
Project Results
  • The team completed the measurement task within 10 minutes, which is the time it takes for the bridge to go through two complete lift cycles.
  • The multi-coupling measurement mode on the ROTALIGN Touch allowed the four couplings of the main shaft to be measured concurrently.
  • The speed of the shaft being measured is approximately 2.3rpm.
